Surf'n'Roll Music and Surf Workshop
In September 2012, for the third time, our Surf’n‘Roll Music and Surf workshop takes place in the Camino Surf Camp in Galicia: Three professional jazz musicians from Austria join the Camino Surf Team, and together we offer not only music- and improvisation-classes in the mornings, but also surf-courses in the afternoons.
The combination of movement, creativity and arts enhances the development of psychosomatic consciousness. Many similarities exist between music and sports: First of all, it’s heaps of fun – but it’s also about motivation, training, coordination, improvisation, rhythm, and more!
While we dedicate the mornings to lessons on various musical instruments, improvisation & ensemble classes as well as rhythmic exercises, the afternoons are reserved for sports-classes. Here you can choose from surfing, windsurfing, tennis, jogging or biking. This combination allows for many synergy effects to develop which in turn will ease the acquisition of skills in both domains. We’ll be glad to show you how to profit from this “magic” synergy between music and sports.

Galicia, located in the uttermost northwest of Spain, was considered the end of the world – Finisterrae – until the discovery of the Americas. Up to now, this remote part of the Iberian peninsula is widely untroubled by the effects of mass-tourism and therefor still considered an insider tip. Rolling sand-dunes and endless white sandy beaches string together with ragged cliffs and lagoons of all sizes. The mountainous natural preserves harbour wild horses, grazing within the ruins of ancient celtic settlements.
You might have heard of Santiago de Compostela, the third most important place of christian pilgrimage, destination of the Way of St. James and capital of Galicia – but have you ever heard of the Meigas? These are “good witches”, descendants of the old celtic druids, which are still popular within the galician folk.
Valdoviño, a real gem on the Galician coast, hosts the Camino Surf Camp. The beautiful, four kilometer wide, sandy beach Playa de Frouxeira – right on the doorstep – with its perfect surfing-peaks, a lagoon, picturesque hinterland as well as plenty of different surf-spots in range guarantee for a memorable nature- and surfing-experience.
The charming seaport city of Ferrol, just 20 km from the Camino Base Camp, attracts visitors with a variety of spanish/galician culture: from the historic city center with its cafes and tapas bars to the majestic fortresses of San Felipe and La Palma. Besides, discos, clubs and pubs are also on offer: Party on!
The two main airports in Galicia, Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña, are both well connected by a number of airlines, including low-fare ones like ryanair. We have airport-transfers on offer or you choose to go by bus to Ferrol and then on to Valdoviño.

Itinerary
Christoph Mallinger, initiator and head-lecturer of the workshop, former Austrian windsurf champion and currently music-professor in Barcelona (jazz violin & guitar), teams up with his colleagues Christian Kronreif (saxophone, clarinet & flute, “Outstanding Soloist” awardee in Toronto) and Andreas Tentschert (piano, keyboards & percussion) in order to provide you with a variety of attractive music courses:
- Instrumental Lessons (for violin, guitar, saxophone, clarinet, piano, keyboard, organ or bass): Based on the individual skill level of each participant, we will look into the basic technical principles of your instrument, demonstrate sound varieties and different playing techniques, and practise together.
- Rhythm- and Percussion Workshop: In these sessions you’ll find out how important rhythm and pulse are for all styles of music as well as all types of sports. With a number of different exercises and games, we’ll boost your rhythmic feeling which in turn eases many musical as well as sportive challenges. We help you to find your “own pulse”!
- Improvisation- and Ensemble Classes: In small groups we’ll work out the fundamentals for improvisation in various styles of music such as Jazz, Funk, Folk, Blues and Rock’n‘Roll, putting the focus on motives, rhythms, scales & harmonies and “ear-training”.
- Jam Sessions: In the evenings, we’ll organize small concerts or relaxed jam sessions, where the different ensembles can present their rehearsed pieces of music, or just sit together, improvise and jam!

Previous knowledge in improvisation is not necessary, but always welcome and taken into consideration!
Cancellation policy
If cancelled up to 3 days before date of arrival, no fee will be charged. If cancelled later or in case of no-show, the entire activity price may be charged.
