_Why should I do my safari in East Africa?
Wildlife viewing in these countries is simply the best in Africa. And there is a wonderful choice of comfortable lodges and camps, so you can have first class game without giving up creature comforts. Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda are now stable countries with a rich safari history. Wildlife preservation is a high priority for all these governments.
What is the best time of year to visit Kenya and Tanzania?
Let’s start with months you should try to avoid: November and May. This is the rainy season in Kenya and Tanzania and it becomes pretty hard to get around in the remote places our guests want to explore. A mass migration of herd animals moves into Kenya in late July, August, September, and October. This time can be a spectacular time to travel in Kenya. The same migration moves into the Serengeti in Tanzania in December, January, February, and March. These months can be a spectacular time to travel in Tanzania. Climate changes are triggering changes in the timing of the migration, so check with us if you are interested in traveling on the edges of the normal migratory months. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t great game viewing at other times. Off-peak season can be a very relaxing time. The lodges are less crowded and the game reserves not involved in migratory pathways have as much game as normal. It’s all a matter of what you want. Check with us if you have specific time frames in mind for your travel and we can help you plan where to be so you get the best possible game viewing experiences.
What kind of weather can I expect on safari?
Much of Kenya and Tanzania is savanna, comparable to the high plateau, semi-desert areas of Colorado or New Mexico. Altitude ranges from 3,000 to 7,000 feet (915-2,130 meters). Temperatures during the day range from 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Nights are cool with temperatures dipping as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas (Ngorongoro Crater, for example). Even though you will be traveling near the equator, please take our packing recommendations seriously and take along a light jacket or sweatshirt, sweater, and a fleece pullover. Additionally, bring something warm to sleep in at night. Humidity is low. If you don’t travel near the rainy season, it usually doesn’t rain.
What kind of shape do I need to be in?
You get to choose the activity level of your safari. Traditional Land Cruiser safaris require little or no physical activity, although you can add all kinds of active adventures to your safari, including an afternoon walking safari, a morning horseback ride, a day of bicycling, or a canoe adventure. Our safaris are quite active. These trips include many walking days. Each walking day involves three to six hours on foot, with a Land Cruiser shadowing the group so you can walk as much of that time as you want and ride the rest of the way. On these trips, you also spend some time in a traditional Land Cruiser safari, but these safaris are definitely for people who want to be more active.
What type of clothing do I need to bring?
After you book your trip we provide you with our guide book which has an extensive section on packing, along with several packing lists. There are no special items that you need to purchase for your safari. Casual wash and wear clothing is the most appropriate. During the day, the best clothing is shorts or safari pants. Lightweight cotton or nylon tops and cotton or nylon shirts are the norm. While in the bush, it is helpful to wear neutral colors such as khaki, grey, tan, or olive. Primates, birds, and insects have color vision. Bright colors can frighten away the monkeys while attracting bugs.
What kind of medical care do I need before I go on safari?
Before you leave for an international destination you should consult your physician. The pre-departure materials you receive from us include detailed information about vaccinations and other health related matters you should discuss with your physician. You will also need to decide on a malaria prevention medication. Our pre-departure materials outline the alternatives available so you can talk intelligently with your physician about the choices. We also give you detailed recommendations for personal mosquito prevention measures you should follow while in East Africa. _____
