Learn to ice climb on the spectacular Root Glacier is an adventure you won’t soon forget. Your adventure starts at our office in Kennecott where your fun, knowledgeable guide outfits you with the proper gear for a day of ice climbing. Hiking through the abandoned mining town of Kennecott you follow a trail to the toe of the Root Glacier. After learning some basic crampon techniques, you head out on the ice in search of the perfect climbing wall. Our safe and knowledgeable guides are experts in tailoring the days activities to your goals and ability. You’ll learn basic ice climbing techniques in a fun and encouraging atmosphere in one of the most spectacular settings on earth.

By Car from Anchorage: Follow the Glenn Highway east to Glennallen. Turn south on the Richardson Highway to the Edgerton Cutoff and follow the signs to Chitina. From Chitina take the McCarthy Road to its end at the Kennicott River. From there it's a short 5 minute walk or shuttle ride to the town of McCarthy.
By Air from Anchorage: There are a handful of private air services that provide flights from Anchorage to McCarthy. Please contact us for further information.
By Air from Chitina: Wrangell Mt. Air operates regular flights from Chitina to McCarthy. Please contact us for further information.
By Car from Anchorage via Valdez: If you've got some extra time and would like to enjoy the spectacular scenery of Prince William Sound, this is a great way to travel to McCarthy. From Anchorage follow the Seward Highway south to Whittier. From Whittier you and your car board an Alaska Marine Highway ferry to Valdez. From Valdez follow the Richardson Highway north to the Edgerton Cutoff. Turn and follow the signs to Chitina. From Chitina take the McCarthy Road to its end at the Kennicott River. From there it's a short 5 minute walk or shuttle ride to the town of McCarthy.
